The Backstory:
This is a song I wrote with my first band, The Difference, quite a few years ago. Age has mellowed me and the song quite a bit, apparently.
It was written in response to mentally handicapped kid named Chris being taunted mercilessly in high school. During one particular episode, his face went blank, and he seemed to retreat to a place inside himself where no one could touch him.
Despite (or because of) his inability to stop the jeers, he would turn himself off, refusing to engage, his eyes empty and his stance firm.
The words of this song were my attempt to imagine what an ounce of his life might be like... with all the hyperbole and outrage that a 10th grader could possibly muster.
lyrics
Lyrics:
A brief generalization, a broad configuration
For the man who's freezing on the inside
The center of attention, but no one wants to see him
So, once again, he runs and hides
The only heat provided for him is a candle...
Burning up in the corner of his mind
Pushing him onward, upward and outward
So he can find himself
Difficulty to walk, impossibility to talk
Communication frustrates him
No one can be a friend
When will this nightmare end?
It builds and builds and builds until he breaks
Pushing him onward, upward and outward
